Dental Care During Pregnancy

Dental treatment while you are pregnant can provide many years of benefits to you and your baby. Oral health is also very important during pregrancy and should not be neglected. Studies show that dental disease may increase the risk of delivering a baby too early.

1.  Make a prenatal dental appointment today!

Call MultiCare Dental at 503-988-3711 for a dental appointment if you are expecting a baby.

2. Stop tobacco use.

Call Great Start at 1-866-667-8278 to get help stopping smoking. Tobacco use is unhealthy for both you and your baby.

3. Take care of your teeth and gums.

During your pregnancy, it is important to:

  • Brush at least two times a day using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride in it.
  • Floss at least once daily.

4. Get your teeth cleaned and checked during pregnancy.

The germs that cause tooth decay are most often spread from mom to baby sometime between 6-36 months. Get your teeth cleaned and checked during your pregnancy and have any needed dental work completed by the time your new baby has their first tooth.

The more unfilled cavities that you have, the more cavity-causing germs you may have and may pass on to your baby. This puts your baby at risk for getting cavities.

If you have periodontal disease, or gum disease, your baby has a greater chance of being born prematurely with low birth weight.

5. Eat a healthy diet.

During your pregnancy make sure you are eating a healthy diet and limit snacking on pop, sweets, and starchy snacks like chips because they can cause cavities.

Babies’ teeth begin forming in the fourth month of pregnancy, so it is important to get plenty of calcium in your diet for the baby’s teeth and bones. Good sources of calcium are milk, cheese, dried beans and leafy green vegetables.
